Vaccinating your pets will protect them from deadly infectious diseases. A vaccination protocol is an essential tool that can shield your pet’s health and extend their life.
Book an appointment today to get your pet vaccinated and to confirm a regular vaccination protocol with the vet.
What vaccinations do your pets need?
All dogs need the 5-in-1 core vaccination and all cats need the 3-in-1 core vaccination. In some areas, the vet may recommend non-core vaccines for pets who are at risk of exposure to infectious diseases unique to that area. Ask the vet about non-core vaccines.
In South Africa, all pet owners are legally mandated to vaccinate their pets against rabies. The vet will sign your pet’s vet card to prove they have been given the rabies vaccine.
Why vaccinate?
- Vaccines ensure that pets are protected from infectious diseases.
- Vaccination builds herd immunity – curbing the spread of infectious diseases and also protecting those pets who cannot be vaccinated due to age or for other health reasons.
- Pet vaccines protect humans from zoonotic diseases and exposure to the rabies virus.
When should pets be vaccinated?
Puppies and kittens acquire immune defences from their mothers for the first six weeks of life. Their first core and non-core vaccines should be given at six, nine and 12 weeks of age. They will get boosters at six months and then annually after that, or once every three years, depending on the vaccine manufacturer’s recommendation.
Rabies shots are given at three months, 12 months and then annually or triennially (every three years). Confirm your pet’s vaccine protocol with the vet.
