What is dental scaling and cleaning?

Dental scaling is the thorough cleaning and examination of your pet’s teeth and gums. Your pet will be placed under anaesthetic to ensure they are comfortable and to allow the vet to perform any cleaning, scaling and/or extractions without causing your pet any pain or distress.

Why should pets’ teeth be scaled?

Oral bacteria cling to your pet’s teeth, causing a build-up of plaque that hardens into dental tartar. This tartar can cause gum inflammation and, if left unchecked, can develop into periodontal disease, destroying gum tissue and the tooth structures. Bacterial infection from periodontal disease can affect your pet’s heart, liver and kidneys and ultimately shorten their life.

When should pets have dental check-ups

It is convenient to schedule a dental check-up, cleaning and scaling procedure with your pet’s annual health check-up. If you brush your pet’s teeth at home, they will need fewer dental procedures throughout their lives, but the vet will check their teeth at each vet visit.
